DESPERATELY SEEKING JESUS 111

The Cutting of the Great Tree: A Prophetic Warning for Modern Power
Scripture Focus: “I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his Fruit
Focus: Daniel 4:13-14
In our modern culture, we are mesmerized by towers of human strength. We watch earthly leaders navigate the halls of government, utilizing executive orders, structural appointments, and raw political control to build massive systems of authority. We see a landscape that often prioritizes institutional dominance over human dignity, leaving the immigrant, the low-income family, and people of color to suffer on the margins.
When we watch these kingdoms being built, it can feel like their power is untouchable. But the Word of God provides a detailed blueprint of what happens when human pride tries to touch the heavens. To understand our present moment, we must return to the bedroom of King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 4 and look closely at the terrifying dream that shook the greatest empire on earth.
The Majestic Vision of Human Power
King Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in his house and flourishing in his palace when a dream made him afraid. In his vision, he saw a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was immense. Scripture details the staggering scope of this tree's power:
- It grew large and strong: Its height reached all the way to the sky, and it was completely visible to the very ends of the earth.
- Its appearance was beautiful: The leaves were green and vibrant, and its branches were packed with an abundance of good fruit—enough to provide food for all living things.
- It was a place of shelter: The wild animals of the field found shade under its massive canopy, the birds of the air dwelt securely in its branches, and all flesh fed from it.
This tree was a perfect, detailed representation of Nebuchadnezzar’s empire. It represents any superpower or political movement that becomes a global force, providing economic security, massive military shade, and reaching an architectural height that demands the world's attention. It is the ultimate symbol of human self-exaltation.
The Decree of the Holy Watcher
But as the king looked upon the greatness of his own creation, the spiritual realm broke through. Nebuchadnezzar saw a watcher—a Holy Messenger—descending directly out of heaven. The Messenger did not negotiate; He shouted with a voice of thunder, issuing a devastating command:
“Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit! Let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches! Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth!”
The decree shifted instantly from an abstract tree to a judgment on the human mind: “Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.”
The Holy Messenger declared the exact reason for this severe sentence: So that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses—even setting up over it the lowest of people.
The Ignored Advice: Mercy over Might
When no magician or astrologer could interpret the dream, Daniel stood before the king. He boldly revealed that the tree was Nebuchadnezzar himself. Knowing the judgment that was looming, Daniel offered the king a profound piece of divine advice:
“Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.” (Daniel 4:27)
God did not demand a larger army, tighter borders, or more executive decrees. God demanded righteousness and mercy to the poor.
Tragically, the king did not take heed. Twelve months later, as he walked through his palace boasting, "Is not this great Babylon, that I have built... by the might of my power?" the voice from heaven fell. Instantly, the tree was hewn down. The king lost his human mind, was driven from men, ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven until seven years passed over him.
History is Repeating Itself
When we look at our leaders today using raw power to bypass laws, appointing personal loyalists over law enforcement, and allowing judges to corrupt true justice, we are watching history repeat itself.
When a political movement rules out the words of Jesus—like His command in Matthew 7 to "Judge not, that ye be not judged"—they are operating in the exact same beastly spirit as Nebuchadnezzar. They forget that Isaiah 64:6 declares our own righteousness to be as filthy rags. Without the Holy Spirit directing our paths, human leaders naturally turn into "beasts" that operate by the law of the jungle—trampling the weak, the stranger, and the immigrant to protect their own branches.
But God's word stands firm. The government ultimately rests on the shoulders of Jesus Christ (Isaiah 9:6), not on political parties. If we want our nation to truly prosper, we must stop exalting the "Great Trees" of human ambition. We must pick up our cross, submit to the Holy Spirit, and actively execute the true Word of God by showing radical mercy, justice, and love to the "least of these." Because there is no other name above (THE NAME) I KNOW A NAME. (JESUS)
