The Bewitched Touch
Desperately Seeking Jesus 111 – Part 2
Scripture Focus
“O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth?” — Galatians 3:1
“…because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” — 2 Thessalonians 2:10–11
Reflection
In Alfred Hitchcock’s A Nice Touch, Mary Templeton is portrayed as a strong, successful married woman who works in movie productions selecting talents for rolls. Yet she falls under the spell of Harry Pope, who will do anything to become a famous actor, a deceiver who cloaks evil in charm. What begins as admiration becomes desperation, until she is maneuvered into contemplating murdering her own husband under the influence of the one who seduces her. The “nice touch” was never nice—it was a maneuver of evil.
This mirrors Paul’s warning to the Galatians: they began in truth but were bewitched by persuasive voices. And in 2 Thessalonians, Paul warns of a strong delusion—when people reject truth and embrace lies.
The Analogy – The Bewitched Touch
Mary Templeton → The Nation or Church: Strong, successful, seemingly secure, yet vulnerable when truth is abandoned.
Harry Pope → The Political Leader/Deceiver: Seduces with persuasive words and intrusive behavior redefining lies as truth, cloaking unlawful actions in charisma.
The Murder → Crossing the Line of Law and Truth: Just as Mary is maneuvered into crime, so too can citizens be maneuvered into unlawful acts when bewitched by deception through political leadership
The “Nice Touch” → is really The Mask of Evil: What appears appealing is actually destructive. The “bewitched touch” is the spiritual delusion that leads people astray.
Wake‑Up Call
On a larger scale, political leaders can wield the same manipulative power. Through persuasive deception, they can seduce entire parties or nations into crossing lawful boundaries. Lies repeated become accepted as truth. Hate wrapped in rhetoric becomes normalized. What Hitchcock dramatized in one relationship, Scripture warns us it can happen to whole societies.
When truth is rejected, delusion takes its place. When leaders redefine lies as righteousness, people can be bewitched into unlawful actions—believing they serve a higher cause while violating the very laws meant to protect them.
Persuasive Leaders who bewitched nations
- Mao Zedong (China): The Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, Mao's policies, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, led to widespread famine, executions, and persecution, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 45 to 78 million people, making him one of the deadliest dictators in history.
- Adolf Hitler (Germany): As the dictator of Nazi Germany, Hitler initiated World War II and orchestrated the Holocaust, the systemic genocide of six million Jews, as well as millions of others. His actions and the war he started are linked to nearly 50 million deaths worldwide.
- Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union): Stalin's reign of terror included mass purges, forced labor camps (Gulags), and the forced collectivization of agriculture, which caused massive famines. Estimates of those who died under his regime range from 20 to 30 million people.
- King Leopold II (Belgium): Though not officially a dictator, but the monarch of Belgium and absolute ruler of the Congo Free State, his colonial regime was responsible for the deaths of an estimated 10 million Congolese people through forced labor, execution, and brutality in the pursuit of natural resources like rubber.
- Pol Pot (Cambodia): As the leader of the Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot attempted to transform Cambodia into an agrarian society. His regime orchestrated the Cambodian genocide, leading to the deaths of around 1.7 to 2 million people—nearly a quarter of the country's population—through execution, starvation, and forced labor.
- Idi Amin (Uganda): His brutal regime in Uganda, marked by ethnic cleansing and the suppression of political opponents, is believed to be responsible for the deaths of between 100,000 to 500,000 people.
- Saddam Hussein (Iraq): Hussein's rule was characterized by the brutal repression of ethnic minorities, including the use of chemical weapons against the Kurds, and the mass execution of political opponents, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands.
Application
Guard your heart against voices that redefine truth, whether personal or political.
Test every word against God’s Word, not against charisma or persuasion.
Recognize that what seems “nice” may be a snare.
Cling to the truth, for only God’s Word sets us free.
Pray for discernment in leadership, that deception may be exposed and truth upheld.
✝️ Prayer Thought Lord Jesus, keep us from the “bewitched touch.” Guard our hearts and our nation from deception. Give us discernment to see beyond charm, to resist strong delusion, and to cling to Your truth even when leaders or crowds are seduced. Amen.
